I'm looking out at our first snowfall of the year, I've been reviewing Christmas-themed books for weeks now, all the stores are decked out in red, green and glitter - and I'm beginning my annual panic. The countdown to the holidays seems to start earlier - and I seem to feel even less prepared - every year that passes.
But I've already started a pile of book gifts for friends and family (my Linus blanket for the season) and have subjective recommendations below (limited to three per genre with much muttering and some help from wiser loons) for those looking for ideas. As always, these are mainly hardcovers - have a look at our Recommended Reads 2006 to find excellent titles that are likely to be out in paperback this year.
