Once again Dorothea Benton Frank has given us a story woven together by family, love and unspoken values. The setting is the beautiful Lowcountry of South Carolina. Bulls Island is the story of two Southern families that have been feuding for centuries. The Langleys have power and money through banking and investments, while the Barrett family made their way to the top working hard, establishing their grocery and liquor stores.

Betts McGee is returning to her home town of Charleston South Carolina after twenty years. She has made her life in New York City with her son Adrian. A single mother working to support her son, she has become an accomplished businesswoman in an equity firm. Now her boss is giving her the chance of a lifetime to oversee the Bulls Island project in Charleston. Refusing to take the assignment could be the end of her career. They are investing money in a new land development project and she will be working directly with the owner, J.D. Langley. Caught off guard, she does not want to admit that J.D. is her former fiancé.

A family tragedy tore Bett's family apart and now twenty years later Betts is home to face her past. She has been estranged from her father and her free spirited sister. She brings with her a secret that she has kept hidden from them. Just thinking of working with J.D. makes her knees weak. She knows in her heart that she has never stopped loving him, but his controlling and overbearing mother thought Betts was never good enough for her son. Now Betts has learned that J.D.'s marriage is unraveling, and fears that old feelings will claim her again.

Working on the Bulls Island project and re-connecting with her family has Betts agonizing over the things that happened in the past. Can she forgive and move forward or will she allow her fears to control her life once again? Bulls Island is written with Southern wit and charm.
