An eruption of house fires has brought Detective Mia Mitchell and Chicago Fire Department Lieutenant Reed Solliday together. They are temporarily assigned to work together and find the arsonist. Mia has just returned from a botched case where she was injured and her best friend (who is also her partner) almost fatally wounded. Mia's emotional stability is not at its best. Though uncomfortable at first, Reed and Mia settle down into a relationship based on respect for each other. They fall into a routine, working together to find the person responsible for the destructive fires. Each seems to be more devastating than the last and the clock is ticking to catch the arsonist.

Reed has skeletons in his own closet. He doesn't feel worthy of finding another love after losing his wife - his best friend and only love. As the investigation continues, he senses the possibility of falling in love again. But can Reed let himself fall in love without feeling like he has betrayed his dead wife? Mia is a cop's daughter, but what people do not know is that her father was abusive. Her sister tried to get out the wrong way. She fell into a bad crowd, landing her in prison. Mia is also dealing with the guilt that she did not have her partner's, back and he almost lost his life. She hasn't been able to face him or his wife. She needs to find the assailant but has been taken off the case to deal with the arsonist. With all her emotional baggage, can Mia let her guard down for a man?

Count To Ten has it all - passion, suspense, secrets and betrayal. Mia and Reed are complex but interesting characters that you love immediately. The secondaries bring out fascinating secrets that have you turning the pages for more of the spellbinding plot. Karen Rose is a fabulous author with a flair for creating a tumultuous tale that has you on the edge of your seat until you turn the last page.
