Slightly Engaged    by Wendy Markham Order:  USA  Can Red Dress Ink, 2006 (2006) Paperback      Reviewed by Shannon Bigham I eagerly awaited Wendy Markham's third book (following Slightly Single and Slightly Settled) featuring Tracey Spadolini, who has dubbed herself the 'last single girl in Manhattan.' Truly, Tracey is not badly off – she is only in her twenties and lives with her boyfriend Jack. However, Tracey feels differently. Having lived with Jack for a year and a half now (much to the dismay of her diehard Catholic parents), she wonders when and if he will ever propose marriage. For heaven's sake, even her flamboyant, homosexual friend Raphael is getting married to his new partner. When Jack's mother confidentially discloses to Tracey that she has given Jack a family engagement ring, Tracey is over the moon, because that means Jack will propose soon. Tracey secretly starts buying bridal magazines and her married friend Kate pressures her to book a reception venue. While Tracey is more than ready to move forward with wedding plans, weeks and then months pass after her conversation with Jack's mother and Jack has yet to pop the question. What is the deal here? Tracey is trying so hard not to become a marriage-obsessed woman, but she cannot help herself and simply cannot figure out what is holding Jack up. Wendy Markham writes some of the funniest chick lit books out there. Her writing is laugh out loud funny and her characters are well developed. I thoroughly enjoy reading about Tracey, who is such a likeable character as she tries not to become overly obsessed with tying the knot, maintaining her weight loss of forty pounds, quitting smoking (for Jack), and not losing her cool while she waits for an engagement ring. Slightly Engaged is a fantastic follow up to the two prior books and should not be missed by Markham fans.
