In Laura Abbot's Second Honeymoon, a married couple close to their twentieth wedding anniversary have come to a point in their relationship where they are thinking of separation. Meg and Scott Harper each feels neglected and under-appreciated by the other, and that things cannot continue this way. The romance in their marriage died long before, and it's been quite a while since they had sex. Their two adolescent children, Hayley and Justin, have their own problems. They're also dealing with Scott's aging parents, one of whom will eventually need daily assistance. It takes a family crisis to bring them back together again.

It was refreshing to read a story based on this later stage in a relationship - that of a couple whose marriage is close to being over. It made for a non-traditional romance, from the point of view of a love that is not new. It shows how love can begin again despite twenty years of being in a dissolving relationship. I also appreciated the angle that focused on the care taking of older parents, and how it can affect a marriage. Laura Abbot did a good job with both story lines, and created realistic characters in both adults and adolescents. I recommend this well-written book to romance lovers looking for something out of the ordinary.
