She's working on her fourth novel by day and is an amateur bartender by night. As this story opens, she heads to private Hempstead Island off the coast of Seattle for her ex-fiancé's wedding. The groom is also her editor, pressing her for her latest Loretta Starling mystery, and this tale is interspersed with draft notes for it. Kate almost misses her ride but leaps from the end of the dock into the arms of Jake Hawkins, once a pro surfer and now an elite travel guide. Of course, they have a romantic history. She even used him as the hero in her books. They make a truce. A small train meets them when they arrive and off they go. But it stops abruptly when it encounters a stuffed deer on the tracks. At the mansion, they join an eclectic crowd filled with tension and grudges. Later, in search of champagne, Kate and her old friend Marla stumble upon the poisoned bride. As always, Kate asks herself 'What would Loretta do?' Oddly, as she investigates, this mystery seems to come from the plot of her latest novel. Kate does solve the mystery but then concludes it's time for Loretta to go so that she can figure out what Kate would do.
