Cathy Clamp continues to develop the world of the shape-shifting Sazi (the previous eight books were written together with C. T. Adams) in a new paranormal romance, Forbidden. And, though I had not read any of the previous books, I was able to follow this one.

It seems that Luna Lake is different from other shape-shifting communities in that different species of Sazi live there together - in a harmony that is enforced via the strict control of the Mayor and police chief. Young Wolven agent Claire Evans is sent there by the Council to find out what is going on.

As she drives with Danielle (an owl shifter whose family live in Luna Lake and who is returning to help find two missing younger siblings), they are attacked by a powerful predator. Alek, who hopes to enter the police academy, saves Claire's life and a rather bumpy relationship develops between them.

They face significant challenges as there's something very rotten in the town of Luna Lake. Why is no-one searching for the missing children? Why are people forgetting that the children are missing? It becomes even more difficult after circumstances turn both of them into pack Omegas, forced to do everyone else's bidding.

But Claire and Alek have help - from elderly owl-shifters and the Council - and do succeed in bringing down a monster and ending a Great Experiment gone awry. Sazi fans will enjoy Forbidden and look forward to more.
