Michelle Cole has come to the Scilly Isles to start fresh and get over her friend's betrayal. She hopes to find a new sense of purpose after buying a charming B&B and turning it into her latest business venture.

Ray Powell has come home to the island to recuperate from his injuries after a difficult mission and is shocked to find the friend who used to run the old B&B has passed away and an American is now the new proprietor. Despite wanting only some peace and quiet, Ray finds himself attracted to Michelle.

As for Michelle, she can't believe the good-looking soldier is interested in her; she's never had a lot of success when it comes to men. As they spend more time together and Ray shows her the secrets of the inn and the magic of the Scilly Isles, Michelle realizes that leaving everything behind to start fresh might have been a far better idea than she ever anticipated.

This is an uncomplicated story of two people with different agendas and backgrounds who meet and fall in love. As a whole I found the book rather more like meandering travelogue with Ray acting as Michelle's tour guide as he shows her around the small island that had been his home as a boy. When Michelle's mother unexpectedly shows up the story perks up a degree or two, but I found that the chemistry between the leads never really heats up to a believable level.

If you're in the mood for a sweet, straightforward romance, with limited characterizations then The Deepest Night is the perfect winter romance for you.
