Here they, and their descendants, can live a safe and secluded life away from the persecution of those who don't understand their ways, or their powers. In Dance Upon the Air, book one of the three part series, the author fast-forwards to present day Three Sisters Island and introduces Nell Channing, a 'Hollywood wife' who's staged her own death to escape her high-powered and abusive husband. She can't understand what has drawn her to this tiny, windswept isle, but once Nell sets foot on its shores, she knows she's safe - and that she's finally come home. She meets Mia Devlin and Ripley Todd, the other two women who, in this current generation, make up the 'three' who hold the formidable powers handed down from their ancestors. Nell has never been aware that she had any sort of powers at all. Her whole life she's been shy, quiet and biddable. She still can't believe that her desperate plan to get away from her husband actually worked. But with renewed faith in herself, and overwhelmed with a sense of finally belonging, her outlook couldn't be more positive. Nell convinces Mia to hire her as the new chef in Mia's bookstore, Caf9 Book, sets up her own catering business, and finds herself being courted by the local sheriff, Zack Todd. She also begins meeting with Mia to explore and learn how to control her powers. Things couldn't be more perfect and Nell couldn't be happier, yet she still chooses to keep certain aspects about her old life secret for fear her husband would find her. Despite all her caution, however, he tracks her down and threatens Nell and those she's come to love. In Dance Upon the Air, Roberts delivers her usual bewitching tale with consummate skill.
