A computer virus that targets and kills the operator and not the hardware or software, with which he or she is working? For us, a sinister threat that could come to life in the future. For J.D. Robb (a.k.a. Nora Roberts) and creator of Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her futuristic cop world of 2059, a chilling reality that's taken down one of her own in a bloody and gruesome way, and wounded numerous other cops. One of those hurt is Ian McNab, EDD cop, computer hacker extraordinaire, and current lover of Eve's aide, Delia Peabody. Eve, along with every cop who works with her, takes what's happened as a personal affront and vows to find and stop those responsible.

With the help of her usual team of regulars, and of course the ever-present support and love of Eve's sexy, darkly mysterious husband, Roarke (a man whose own talents with all things electronic border on the uncanny), Eve soon understands why the gruesome attacks are happening. A vigilante group has targeted child molesters and pedophiles, those who have continuously slipped through the legal cracks. Unfortunately innocents are dying alongside these unsavory men and women. Finding the vigilantes is another matter once it's determined that people from every level of society are involved, including cops, judges and doctors. Even so, Eve Dallas is determined to stop the group she dubs terrorists before another cop or innocent dies, and before more messages blink onto computer screens announcing 'Absolute Purity Achieved'.

J.D. Robb delivers another highly entertaining read in Purity in Death. While her format has become somewhat formulaic after fifteen installments, it's the plot lines and the characters of this series that continue to entertain and grip readers' imaginations, Eve and Rourke most especially. Roarke still harbors a myriad of secrets as does Eve herself. But their love for one another continues to grow. Eve might still be baffled by her deep and intense feelings for her husband, but she's finally accepted how much she needs him in her life, even though she and Rourke are very often at odds. Once again J.D. Robb has created a nifty story with a little bit of everything, that doesn't disappoint.
