Charmian 'Kit' Kittredge is back in the second novel of the Disenchanted & Co. series. This time, Kit and the other citizens of Rumsen are being terrorized by a Wolfman and Lady Eugenia Bestly believes the Wolfman was her husband. She seeks help from Kit, a woman whom Lady Bestly once sought to ruin. With the prodding of Deathmage Lucien Dredmore, Kit agrees to help Lady Bestly and figure out why the attacks are still occurring since the Wolfman is dead.

As it turns out, there are plenty of Wolfmen and, even worse, they were once men who were turned into mechanized killers. Here it should be mentioned that in the steampunk world of Rumsen, mechanized animals are very popular both as pets and pests. However, trying to kill a partially mechanized man with the qualities of a wolf proves to be most trying for Kit.

While trying to keep the city safe from Wolfmen, Kit is also trying to figure out who is behind the creation of these mechanized monsters. Who is the mastermind of this terrible project and why? As the answers reveal themselves, Kit finds herself, once again, caught in the middle and in terrible danger.

Aside from the dangers and questions she faces with the Wolfmen, Kit is still stuck in an internal tug of war over the two men who love her, Deathmage Dredmore and Chief Inspector and longtime friend Tom Doyle.

As with the first novel in this series, I didn't really get hooked until I was about one-third of the way into the story. However, once the action picks up and the story really starts to unravel, it is hard to put this novel down. As with any series, readers will benefit by reading the first novel before this one, but The Clockwork Wolf is written well and new readers starting with this novel will not find themselves feeling like they were dumped in the middle of story that they cannot make sense of.
