Caroline Evans is the divorced mother of a teenage girl. Having a tough time making things meet - especially after coming from a lifestyle of comfort - Caroline is at the end of her rope.

She decides to take her fifteen year old daughter for a weekend in the country to bond, and stumbles upon a barn for sale. She wants to buy it, but it is a rainy night and she needs to get herself and Issy dry and comfortable. They find a pub, where the nicest lady (the owner, Maggie) takes them in. Caroline begins to tell Maggie her problems and finds a friend. Caroline and Issy soon move to the pub.

As the renovation of her home progresses, Caroline finds her ex husband James at her door. He is in trouble and needs her to believe that he did not do it. Then he vanishes after turning Caroline's life upside down once more. A friend tells her that James has committed suicide and Issy believes he was murdered. As the story unfolds, Caroline realizes that she needs to find peace for herself and Issy, even if that means solving a murder.

This is only the second book I have read by Elizabeth Adler but I am a fan. She sweeps you up and carries you away with a story that pulls the heart strings and leaves you guessing. I love the way she intertwines her characters and makes a family out of them, as well as her way of describing settings, perfectly balanced with her plot. Excellence comes in all forms and this is one of them.
