Miss Sophie Valentine lives in a small town, where everybody knows everybody and everyone likes to gossip. Sophie gives them lots of material, but not intentionally. Even though the man who ruined her asked for her hand, she refused. Sophie did not want to be subjected to the unhappiness the marriage would have brought. Then, out of spite, she put an ad in the Farmers Gazette for a husband. Little did she know that a man who had been burning for her would show up at the door. The dark handsome stranger soon has the entire town in a tizzy.

Lazarus Kane has been searching for the last ten years for Miss Valentine, ever since the night he saw her on the balcony at the ball - an angel far out of his reach and class, but tempting nevertheless. Wayward in her own world, not following society's rules, she is an angel to him. He must keep the secret of the balcony if he wants to win her hand - the past might be dangerous if all were to be revealed. Lazarus plans to woo Sophie into temptation until she gives him all that he desires.

Sophie is like a modern day woman locked into the trappings of past society. She does what she wants, when she wants, and doesn't care about the wagging of tongues. Her attitude gives the book an edge of humor mixed with pure lust, something frowned upon in that era. The story takes romance up a notch and if you are prim and proper, I guarantee you will blush, look about and make sure no one is watching. I totally enjoyed this one.
