Nell has spent her life in poverty. Just before dying, her mother tells Nell that her father is the Earl of Rushden. Nell writes the Earl, asking for money so that her mother can have medical care - he ignores her letter.

After her mother dies, Nell is intent on revenge. She buys a gun and breaks into the Earl's house. But she realizes that the man she's about to kill is too young to be her father. Simon St. Maur - who recently inherited the title, Earl of Rusden, but no money to support it - is astounded by Nell's resemblance to the previous Earl's daughter, Kathleen. Unknown to Nell, she is Kathleen's twin, stolen from her home as a young child.

To Simon, living on credit until he can find a rich bride, Nell is a godsend. He'll have his bride and Nell will have her inheritance. But getting Nell to agree that she deserves the money proves more difficult than he imagined. When she finally consents to marry him, he sets out to prove she is the missing heiress and turn her into a lady.

Someone doesn't want Nell to inherit and he'll stop her any way he can. Nell, and Simon, don't understand the danger she is in.

Nell is a take it-in-the-chin girl from Victorian London's lowest class. Simon is a charming ne'er-do-well, who wants her inheritance. This fish-out-of-water romance is an engaging love story with lots of steamy, married sex.
