All Callie Grey has ever wanted is her own happily ever after. For a while, she thought she was going to get it with long-time heartthrob Mark Rousseau. That Mark was currently her boss and barely gave her the time of day didn't matter. That he'd all but ignored her after a hot and heavy weekend in Vegas didn't ring any warning bells with Callie either, so smitten is she with a man whom everyone else thinks is just a little too smooth. Then, just as her co-workers predicted, Mark ends up breaking Callie's heart when he shows up at the office one Monday morning with his wealthy and influential new fiancée in tow.

Things only get worse when she decides to make Mark jealous by faking a relationship with the new town vet, Ian MacFarland. The fact that Ian isn't really a people person doesn't faze the outgoing Callie. She convinces herself she can look past MacFarland's quirkiness as long as Mark notices her again. But as she spends more time with Ian and digs deeper into his annoyingly orderly and rigid life, she realises he's not really a lost cause after all and decides it's time to give the good doctor a personality makeover.

Despite a few flaws like Callie's sometimes overwrought internal musings and her rather juvenile crush on Mark, Higgins' latest is a pleasing contemporary romance. It's quirky, light-hearted and often very funny as Callie gets herself into one crazy predicament after another while trying to win over the crusty town vet. All I Ever Wanted illustrates why, after only a handful of books, Kristan Higgins is fast becoming a romance reader favourite.
