Julie Donovan wants to start life over for herself and her six-year-old daughter Lizzie, and leave Jefferson, Texas behind. Her parents have been very supportive and understanding, allowing her to live in the apartment over the garage, and taking care of Lizzie while she taught school. Julie wants the past behind her and for the gossip to stop. A single mother, refusing to name Lizzie's father, she has had the town talking for years. Now she has moved to St. Jo, Texas where she knows no one. She has bought an old farmhouse on five acres of land and will be teaching at the local school.

When Julie meets Lucky Griffin Luckadeau (the owner of the ranch next door) she is in shock. He is a piece of her past she doesn't want to acknowledge - but after their first meeting Lucky denies ever seeing Julie before. It's not long before Lizzie becomes fast friends with Lucky's daughter Annie and the resemblance between the girls could have them being sisters. Now even the Luckadeau family is asking questions.

Julie and Lucky are brought together because of the girls. Both are stubborn, and headstrong, and deny their mutual attraction. As Julie finds out family truths, Lucky seems to pull away and become distant. Sparks fly and power struggles are a part of their everyday life. But when tragedy strikes Julie and Lizzie, Lucky steps in to reveal what his heart has known since they first met. Lucky is drawn to Julie's strength and Julie is witness to the tender side of Lucky when he is with his daughter. They each have one goal in mind and that is one family brought together by fate.

Though Getting Lucky starts off slow with repetitive dialogue, it picks up steam to deliver a satisfying conclusion.
