The young woman lies on her bed, shot through the heart. Between her breasts is a red rose and a gold wedding band, along with the quote 'What is done out of love always takes place beyond good and evil.' Detectives Shasta and Vincent must find the reason a killer would leave his victim in a posed position. Is it a serial killer? If so, where will he strike again?

They decide to put police officer Amber Carfi undercover to seek out the truth. Carfi and Jensen are partners on the job and lovers off-duty. They try to keep their relationship a secret and separate from work. When Jensen isn't invited in on the sting to catch the red rose killer, he frets about Amber's safety, even to the point of investigating the crime on his own.

Amber reinvents herself into a sleazy blond in order to catch the killer's attention. She is so successful she soon finds herself a captive in the murderer's lair.

In the hours Carfi and Jensen find together, Amber doesn't understand why Jensen can't let go of his first wife's belongings. Only after Amber is safely rescued does Jensen realize that yesterday is gone and today is important.

This is a good romantic suspense. Both the romance and the suspense are superb. Readers can look forward to the next Falcon's Bend mystery and hope Amber and Jensen are part of the scene.
