ola was seventeen and madly in love with her boyfriend Dougie. He was tall, dark, and handsome and she considered herself very fortunate to be with him. They were made for each other, always laughing and sharing many interests. The only thing wrong was Dougie's snobbish mother Adele. She did not approve of Lola, thinking she was not good enough for her son. She wanted Dougie to concentrate on his education and felt Lola would hold him back.
ne day Adele approached Lola with an offer. She would pay Lola to break up with Dougie, and get out of his life. Angry and hurt, Lola refused, until later when she found out that her stepfather Alex was in big trouble. Not wanting her mother to find out the shocking news she accepted Adele's offer so she could help Alex out financially, but crushed Dougie's heart by doing so.
en years have passed and Lola has never forgotten Dougie. She still feels the same love for him, even though she has dated other men. A young woman of twenty-seven, she has her own flat and manages a bookstore in London. Her best friend Gabe lives across the hall. They go out clubbing together and confide in one another. Her life seems full, but her love life is lacking.
ne night returning home from work, Lola tries to help a woman who is being mugged, but is attacked herself. Days later she is invited to the woman's home by her husband so she can be properly thanked for her heroism. Lola is stunned to find the woman is none other than Adele, now remarried. Adele is equally shocked to find that Lola was the young woman who came to her rescue. Enter Dougie, still bitter towards Lola after all these years. Lola was never one to give up and she vows to herself to win him back.
ola immediately plans to be in the same places as Dougie. She follows him and his current girlfriend to parties and the theater, always making her presence known. She becomes friends with Dougie's sister and soon Sally is planning ways for Lola to spend time with Dougie. Another man has entered Lola's life too. Her birth father Nick has returned to get to know his daughter and Lola starts planning to get her parents back together.
