Grace Eversleigh has been a companion to the dowager Duchess of Wyndham for the past five years. Grace is very grateful to the Duchess for taking her in after the death of her parents, but the Duchess can be very difficult. The one thing that keeps Grace going is her friendship with Thomas, the current Duke of Wyndham. When Grace and the Duchess are robbed by a highwayman one night, it throws the family into turmoil. The Duchess recognizes the highwayman's features and believes he is her grandson, the child of her late middle son. If he is, he should be the Duke of Wyndham and not Thomas.

Former Army Captain Jack Audley was raised by an aunt after his father drowned at sea when the ship they were on sunk. His mother hung on long enough to give birth to Jack and then died. The Duchess has Jack brought to her so that she can find out if he really is her grandson. She insists that they travel to Ireland to find out if his parents were legally married. Jack can't believe how badly Grace is treated by the Duchess. Though the current Duke at times smooths things over for her, he seems rather spineless. As Jack spends time with Grace, he finds himself falling in love with her. Grace has been taken with Jack since she met him as a highwayman. She knows that the relationship can't go anywhere if he becomes the Duke but she can't seem to stay away from him.

The Lost Duke of Wyndham is highly entertaining in that neither Thomas nor Jack seems to want to be Duke. The chemistry crackles between Jack and Grace but the Duchess does not want them near each other, telling Grace she can't marry above herself. I can't wait to see what happens in the next book, Mr. Cavendish, I Presume.
