Anne Royle can be invisible when she wants to be. But when she lifts a glass from a man at a party she is discovered by Laird Allan, Earl of MacLaren, who has started to watch her every move. Then she is caught in his bedroom looking for letters to prove her heritage. MacLaren decides to take advantage of the situation by seducing her. When his family bursts into the room, he finds himself listening to her tale of being betrothed to him.

As his family prepares for the wedding, MacLaren tries to find a way out of this sticky situation. He agrees to Anne's scheme for now, with the proviso that she keep up her end of the bargain by building up his reputation so that he can marry the widow who left him at the alter. Anne knows she has to eventually break the engagement, but finds herself falling head over heels in love with MacLaren. He is also becoming enchanted with the invisible Royle sister and finds himself wanting to go through with the wedding. Anne keeps her side of the deal by telling outrageous stories of MacLaren's heroism at social events, thus stirring up interest in him.

Kathryn Caskie spins a tale filled with humor and romance. Anne Royle is an endearing character and readers want to see her happily in love. As Maclaren finds himself falling for Anne, it's refreshing to watch the romance bloom between them. How to Engage an Earl is the second in a trilogy about triplets looking into their heritage. The first was How to Seduce a Duke and the last one (I await it eagerly) will be How to Propose to a Prince.
