It's an absolute delight to listen to The Shell Seekers on audio cassette. Not only is it a wonderful story of three generations of an English family with ties in Cornwall and London, but it also has the charm of being performed by Lynn Redgrave.

There is a bone of contention between members of this family – a cherished painting that has been in the family for three generations. Several members want the artist's daughter, Penelope Keeling, to sell the painting and to realize its value when the artist's style comes back into favor. Not willing to give up what has sustained her for many years through one crisis after another, Penelope has managed to hold onto the painting and refuses to sell.

While I listened I had the feeling that it was being read especially and only for me. Lynn Redgrave is a consummate actor and I feel she couldn't give anything but a first-rate performance. Redgrave, who acts each part with different voices, managed to convince me she had a whole cast in front of the mike with her.

The Shell Seekers is a touching story with enough pathos to bring the occasional tear to the listener's eye. Redgrave's reading is dramatic. I recommend the audiobook for several hours of enjoyment - the cassettes served me well on a trip to relieve the monotony of the open road.
