Forty-year-old Tessa Craig is Congressman David Weyburn's speechwriter as well as his lover. When he has a heart attack during an aerobics class and is given CPR by the gorgeous male instructor, his sexual preference becomes a burning question for the campaign. David subsequently dumps Tessa, citing he wants to keep his personal life separate from his political life.

Devastated, Tessa takes a vacation to Dublin, where she meets Irishman Jamie Doyle. His mother is American and also lived in New York before she married his father. Jamie wants to own his own pub, so when Tessa's vacation ends, he boards the flight with her. He crashes on her couch and sets out to find his dream place. His mother and sister arrive to bring him home but end up staying for quite some time in Tessa's apartment. David pops in every now and again to profess his love for her, but Tessa feels that that part of her life is over and starts to fall in love with Jamie.

Herself starts off with Tessa thinking she has the perfect life. But when David has his heart attack and dumps her, and her life seems to crumble, she learns new things about herself. Despite the fact that he is a slob in her house, Jamie dotes on her and shows her every day that he loves her. Leslie Carroll writes a unique storyline involving politics, romance and the unexpected. Readers will love Herself.
