This book follows Out of the Mist as the second in a trilogy about the Stewart sisters. Lark Stewart has a successful career as a country singer. Following a concert one night, she's on her way to a club with fellow band member Danny. Someone shoots at them and Danny is seriously hurt. With very little memory of the shooting, Lark comes briefly under suspicion.

William Quest believes Lark to be his wife, and has been stalking her, wanting to punish her for her supposed misdeeds. He has escaped from jail, and is soon suspected of the shooting. Another possible villain is Lark's angry ex-husband (and former manager) Cody, who is still trying to extract money from her. Before the news of the shooting broke, Lark's Aunt Zelda asked Luke McCloud to check on her niece. Luke knows the family well, and since he dated Lark for many years, he is used to Aunt Zelda's 'feelings'. When he hears of the shooting, Luke decides to be Lark's bodyguard, despite the fact that she doesn't want him around. Lark realizes that the feelings they used to have for each other have not diminished with time.

Though Out of the Blue is the second in a trilogy, it can stand alone, since it very rarely mentions the other sisters or their stories. I was a little befuddled by the fact that the jacket's synopsis states that Danny was murdered, while he survives the shooting in the book. If you can get by that fact, the story is well written and suspenseful, with an unexpected twist for the ending. It left me anxious to read the third book in the trilogy, Out of the Storm.
