Johnny Peterson was a top student and the star of his football and track teams. He had a beautiful girlfriend and they were both about to graduate. They set off to prom night, only to have Johnny's seemingly perfect life ended by a drunk driver.

His family is devastated by the loss; he was the glue that kept them together. His sister Charlie stops playing basketball, his brother Bobby withdraws into himself, his father drinks heavily, and his mom, Alice, develops an ulcer from the stress. While in the hospital, Alice sees Johnny sitting by the window. Not believing her eyes, she calls out to him. He answers to inform her that he is there to help them cope.

Danielle Steel writes with the experience of loss. As a reader who lost a friend in similar circumstances at the same age, I connected with this novel, which deals with the harsh realities of losing a loved one to a drunk driver. Johnny Angel is a bittersweet story about learning to deal with loss and move on with life, without forgetting the lost one and how much you love them.
