This is the first in Amita Murray's series featuring the daughters of an English earl and his Indian mistress. Unladylike Lessons in Love is the story of the eldest of the trio, Lila Marleigh. When their parents died, they were sent from India to live with the Earl's wife Sarah, who loathed them and played Lila, Anya and Mira off each other.

Now, Lila runs an exclusive Mayfair club. As a joke, she states her intention to participate in a curricle race to Brighton, something unacceptable in polite society for any woman, even one on its outskirts. Then Ivor Tristram demands to speak to her, accusing her of being his father's mistress and trying to pay her off. She is enraged.

Complicating her life further, Maisie Quinn shows up at her door, pregnant. After Maisie's mother, a maid in the Marleigh house, was unjustly accused of theft and hanged, seven-year old Maisie ran away. Lila, a teen at the time, couldn't help and has felt guilty ever since. Now, Maisie's lover Sunil has been accused of attacking Tristram's cousin Tiffany.

Lila is determined to prove him innocent and sets to work, persuading Tristram to help her, despite her annoyance with him. Of course readers can see where this is all leading. When the Runners capture Sunil, it takes an audacious plan - and a Brighton race - to save the day.
