Lucy Eastlake, a rising operetta star in Edwardian London, had been taken in by her two eccentric aunts at a very young age. Despite life's hardships, Lucy's optimism never wanes, even when it appears that her spinster aunts might soon lose their estate.

As luck would have it, her aunt Livinia is promised a fortune in rubies. The only catch is that they must travel to France to fetch them. Lucy, always one to embrace a grand adventure, is more than eager to cross the channel with her aunts in tow. What she does not expect is the presence of Professor Ptolemy Archibald Grant, the staid grandson of the lord who has bequeathed Lucy's aunt the rubies. Archie, as Lucy immediately names him, is to act as their escort.

The betrothed professor soon finds himself falling under the spell of the free spirited sprite, their attraction growing with every turn in the road they travel to find the elusive rubies.

The first dozen or so chapters are somewhat tedious, but once the intrepid travellers finally begin their quest, Brockway takes her readers on a delightful and witty romp. The ever-optimistic Lucy and her stuffy Archie scour the French countryside for clues that will lead them to a fortune in rubies. Lucy's eccentric aunts, as well as a her over the top Edwardian theatre friends, spice The Songbird's Seduction with zest, zippy dialogue and enough humour to keep you flipping pages until the more than satisfying conclusion.
