I typically get excited when I get to delve into the latest V.C. Andrews novel. Unfortunately, this time I was just slightly disappointed. Why, you may wonder? These novels are usually very juicy and an entertaining read. Well, this one was good; however, the story started out quite slowly for my tastes.

A good portion of the novel is focused on giving background to the protagonist, Mayfair. Before the story gets going and gets good, the set-up focuses on the seriously smart teenager and her dysfunctional relationship with her socialite stepmother.

Only halfway through the novel does the tale really take off. The beginning of the story gives but a hint to what's to come. Told in flashback style, Mayfair slowly emerges, but not as the perfect, sweet girl everyone thinks her to be. Sure, she's a genius, but she's also human ... and a teenager.

In typical teenage fashion, Mayfair becomes interested in the opposite sex and perhaps takes things a bit too far. Her intelligence also begins to get her trouble when mixed with the surliness of the fickle creature we call teen.

These ingredients melt together and create the perfect storm of lust, love, betrayal, and the unsteady, unsure world of teenagers. Mayfair does not come out unscathed and her story, once it gets off the ground, is the juicy read you expect from V.C. Andrews.
