Lady Irene Knopp works in a dress boutique to keep herself busy. She is the main purchaser of fabric to make the dresses, which is how she meets Grant. Irene likes to keep her aristocratic identity a secret because her family doesn't exactly approve of her job. Being a widow has left her with too much time on her hands. Working saved her life after she lost her husband and, if falling in love makes her have to make a choice between job and romance, she might have to sacrifice the latter.

Grant Benton has been gone for five long years, working in a factory that makes cloth of all different types. He has been working himself to the bone to amass a fortune so that he can buy back the family lands sold by his father. Now that he is the Earl of Crowle and has the money to live a leisurely life, he starts to question whether this is what he really wants. Now the lovely Lady Irene Knopp has caught his heart and has changed everything.

Money doesn't buy you happiness is the underlying theme in this story and it works well. Grant and Irene both come from wealthy, prestigious families and all they want is happiness, which most people have to work for. I found What the Bride Wore totally enjoyable and a good afternoon's read.
