Charlotte Adams is back in town, helping her mom out after her dad's death. She tends to get into all kinds of scrapes. This time she is at a New Year's party at the home of the sister of her old rival, Pamela. When Pamela's sister Theresa is attacked at the party, Charlotte is in the wrong place at the wrong time (hiding upstairs, trying to clear her head). Now she is the center of the investigation, which makes her relationship with Police Chief Joe Silviera a bit awkward. Her old boyfriend, Andrew Schilling, is also at the party. She can't seem to make up her mind between the recently divorced Joe and Andrew, who cheated on her years before.

Joe can't believe that Charlotte would have anything to do with attacking anyone but all the signs point to her. He is trying to clear her but she makes it very difficult, especially since she keeps turning up in the wrong places. The situation also makes it hard for him to build a relationship with her because he does not want it to seem like he is giving her a break. He is not too happy that Andrew keeps showing up to try to get Charlotte back either. Charlotte's old rival, Pamela, seems to have taken a shine to him as well making the whole situation doubly weird for him. He just wants to clear Charlotte and make a life with her if she will have him.

Garden of Secrets, the fifth book in the Angel's Bay series, finally offers closure on Charlotte's love life. Her mother, still nagging Charlotte to get back together with Andrew, is driving her crazy. Though readers get to revisit characters from the previous books, this one can still be enjoyed on its own. Barbara Freethy's website mentions that there will be more Angel's Bay stories; I can't wait to see what comes next.
