Dante Renaldi and Anna Pallino were a hot item years ago; teenagers who knew they were soul mates. Then Anna was attacked, her life saved only because Dante and his foster brothers were close by and intervened. But when her assailant died at Dante's hands, her life and his were changed forever.

Now Dante has come home with a lot of secrets and even more regrets. He's never lost a moment's sleep over the death of Anna's attacker, but abandoning her when she needed him most has eaten away at his soul.

Anna's not willing to forgive him - he disappeared without a word and now he's back, reluctant to talk about himself and worse, trying to insinuate himself into her life and her murder investigation. But as bodies continue piling up and it becomes clear that someone is targeting those responsible for the death of Anna's long-ago attacker, she realises she needs all the help she can get - and she needs Dante back in her life and her bed.

The story starts out well enough with plenty of action, mystery and tension, both emotional and sexual, between the leads. Anna has good reason to mistrust Dante and he's got equally valid reasons to remain close-mouthed about what he's been up to the last decade. Unfortunately their mistrust drags on far too long and interferes with their immediate problem of tracking down a killer - whose identity is ultimately also way too easy to figure out.

The Heart of a Killer intially offers up all the elements of romantic suspense but as a whole the story's rather generic with few real surprises.
