Francesca Gordon needs the best barrister in England to gain custody of her niece. After her sister died, her brother-in-law remarried and never made a proper will before his life ended. Now the young girl is left in the custody of a cruel stepmother. Francesca thinks she has found the right barrister, but when the man is summoned by Edward De Lacey, son of the powerful Duke of Durham, she is furious and confronts Edward about it.

Edward has learned a horrifying secret from his father on his deathbed; it could destroy his life. He desperately needs a barrister to find out if what he was told is true. He has no idea that the barrister had already agreed to help Francesca, but when she shows up he agrees to find someone to help her gain custody of her young niece. He is also licking his wounds from being betrayed by his betrothed after he told her about his father's secret. He believed that she would keep the secret until they could have the barrister straighten it out, but rumors fly making life difficult for Edward and his brothers.

The more that Edward looks for someone to help Francesca, the more he realizes that she may not gain custody of her niece. He is also taken by the way she embraces life, but is daring and feisty. Edward seems cold and uncaring to most but Francesca is seeing a side of him that he has not shown anyone else and she finds herself falling in love with him. Will Edward's secret destroy any happiness they can find and will Francesca be able to raise her niece?

One Night in London has everything from romance to mystery that will grab readers from the first page. Edward is a different person when he is with Francesca and he finds that he likes that, while she, who has been a widow for two years after a fairly happy marriage, also falls for him. Note that a teaser in the last chapter promises a storyline for one of Edward's brothers next.
