Raised in the projects, Valentine Daye was a street person by the age of fifteen. Her first boyfriend was a major drug dealer with a very heavy hand. Val got lucky in a way because he was shot and killed, most likely her only way out. Rich Washington took Valentine under his wing and protected her. They fell in love and became a very happy couple. Rich got them out of the projects. There was one problem. Rich was unfaithful once in a while, and Val was not down with this - and she has kicked some ass in her time.

Val knows her man is messing around. Usually he comes around and things get better, but not this time. Vanessa Knight, a multimillion dollar heiress, has entered the picture. Vanessa is willing to forgive Richard's past and wants to make him hers. She is grooming him to be a vice president of a clothier, Jorge Jacobs. She gives him an ultimatum. Life in the fast lane as an executive or life with Valentine.

Rich now has a decision to make, and it's going to be a hard one. Should he stay with Valentine, who has been with him through thick and thin, or will he take a chance with Vanessa, who is smart, cunning and beautiful? Throughout, Val and Vanessa scheme against each other, each hoping to win Richard's heart.

He Was My Man First is an excellent book, fast paced and fun to read. I found it very hard to put down. The characters are well matched, the dialogue can be quite funny, steamy and out of control. I would definitely add more of these authors' work to my library. And be warned there are some pretty hot sexual encounters between these pages!
