Alison Timberlake is a stay at home mom. When her kids have all gone for college, she suffers the empty nest syndrome strongly. She feels like she has lost her identity in the years that she took care of the kids and her husband, Mac. She gets increasingly upset that she is alone all the time when Mac works long hours. Alison loses it one day when he asks her if she wants eggs for breakfast, when eggs have always made her sick. She decides to take a job in Eternity Springs starting up the new café in the small mountain town.

Mac has made it his goal to be a Federal Judge in the Denver courts and a new case has hit his desk that will take up most of his time. Mac is horrified when he realizes that Ali was serious about going to Eternity Springs - he thought she was just having a drama tantrum. He misses his wife when he gets home from work. She is now four hours away so visiting frequently is not possible. He can't understand why, after over twenty years of marriage, she all of a sudden seems unhappy.

Mac heads to Eternity Springs to spend time with Ali and try to win her back home, but is surprised at how tranquil and peaceful it is. He loves it there and is impressed with Ali's new café, but he also thinks it is time to act like a married couple again. Both Ali and Mac have kept feelings buried, that seem to have come to a head now. Can they resolve their issues before it is too late?

Heartache Falls is the third in Emily March's Eternity Springs series. The leads have issues with which readers can easily identify. Supporting characters have shown up in the past two stories and are old friends. Readers will love this series and will want to continue on to the next book, Lover's Leap.
