Martin returns to Dreyerville Michigan and presents another poignant novella about mother/daughter relationships. It shows how no matter how stormy the relationship, love, understanding and forgiveness win the day.

As a teenager, Marly Hanson ran away from home, unable to understand why her mother put up with her father's continued abuse. Marly marries the high school tough guy who'd saved her, but their marriage soon crumbles, leaving Marly to raise baby Katie on her own. Now her daughter's a teenager and being treated for brain cancer. Katie's greatest wish is to meet her grandmother and see the town where her mother grew up.

While Katie's prognosis is good, Marly knows that could change in an instant, and reluctantly agrees to a short trip home. Once there everything soon becomes complicated: Katie immediately hits it off with Ham, the boy next door and they become inseparable. Ham's dad, Reed Bennett, charms Marly as well.

As their initial three-week visit winds down, Marly has important decisions to make: will she be able to come to terms with the past that led to her estrangement from her parents and more important, can she risk falling in love again?

The story hits home on all levels, save Marly and Reed's relationship. There were a few too many secondary story threads to pull together, leaving little room to fully, and believably develop their romance. Even so, A Song For My Mother is an appealing and heartfelt novella and one that would make a great gift for the mums, daughters, sisters or girlfriends in your life.
