As Jane's bus pulls into Last Chance, she hopes to make a fresh start in her life. She is running from an ex-boyfriend who owes money to the mob (she's unaware that a gift he gave her belongs to the mob). Almost broke, she heads to the local sports bar where she meets a guy playing the fiddle. Immediately attracted to him, Jane goes home with him that night. The next morning, Clay catches her looking in his wallet for his name and is furious.

Clay can't believe the woman tried to rip him off. She has to be a con artist, considering she has two IDs in her pocketbook. He made her dump it when he caught her looking in his wallet with the excuse of wanting to know his name. He has a habit of picking the wrong women and it looks like he did it again. The only problem is that Jane needs help and he always seems to fall for women in distress.

Clay decides to let Jane stay with him until the following Sunday, when he will give her money for a bus ticket. He doesn't count on his mother giving her a job at her beauty parlor and offering her the studio apartment above it. Clay and Jane keep running into each other and Jane is not happy because she wants to go to Nashville to make it big as a country singer. She does not need to get involved with a man and mess up her plans.

Welcome to Last Chance is a small town story, complete with gossiping old biddies. Clay and Jane both have suspenseful histories that gradually emerge in the story. The secondary characters bring humor and a small town closeness to the tale. I look forward to reading the second book in the series, due in the Fall.
