achel Henderson is disillusioned by romance; she was left at the altar by her fiancÚ. This is the second time she has been ditched and to top it off her parents announce that they are getting divorced. Rachel takes off to her home town of Valentine, Texas where romance is seen through rose colored glasses. She decides to deface the famous billboard and paint its red lips black. She ends up in the town jail and makes a wish on the magic veil that she is still wearing.
rody Carlton races over to the billboard after receiving a call that someone is vandalizing it. He can't believe his eyes when he sees a woman in a wedding dress hanging off the billboard. When he realizes that it is Rachel, who was his next door neighbor when he was twelve, he is even more shocked. But he has to arrest her, per the order of the mayor.
achel calls on her lawyer friend Jillian to help her out in court. She ends up with a fine and community service, but it keeps her in Valentine for a while. She feels sparks every time she is near Brody and decides to start
meetings. This divides the town at the worst possible time since the Mayor is running for re-election and his opponent is a close contender. And Brody doesn't want to feel anything for Rachel but he can't help himself - she makes him crazy when she is near him.
achel and Brody's love/hate relationship had me giggling in the beginning at some of their humorous banter, but there are tender moments as well - such as when Brody, who was in the twin towers on 9/11 with his friend, talks to Rachel about his feelings. Supporting characters such as Rachel's parents, the Mayor and Giada (the woman running against him) fill this story with humor and romance.
