Whenever Emma Hammond sees her ex-best friend Josh Morgan on campus, she turns and goes in the opposite direction. The breakup of their friendship during their senior year in high school is legendary.

When Emma's dad wins fifty million dollars in the lottery, her life changes. Should she stay at a college where every day she is hurt and humiliated by running into Josh, move to a different school, or just drop out of college altogether? Always an ordinary, quiet, shy girl, Emma is still quiet, shy, and slightly overweight, even with her newfound wealth. She had trouble making friends on campus before her dad got rich and now she doesn't know whether any friendship she makes is real.

Home for the Christmas holidays, Emma and her family try to cope with the realization that they can do anything they want, and that money doesn't solve every problem. In fact it creates some. Resentment of the other teachers causes her mother to quit her teaching job although she loves her students. Always an artist, she decides to get serious about her painting. She runs off to Paris – without her husband. Emma buys a puppy that she knows she can't keep because her mother is allergic to fur.

Being happy with money is as complicated as being happy without it. Emma realizes that she alone is responsible for the choices that will give her the happiness she needs.
