Avi's Avon the Snail and Edward the Ant are this century's Frog and Toad. The End of the Beginning is a cute story of how the two become friends and go on an adventure, that is perfect for young readers, or for parents to read aloud.

Avon is always reading books about adventures and decides to have one of his own. As he is getting ready to go, he meets his neighbor Edward. Deciding that he would like an adventure too, Edward joins Avon. Together, they journey to the end of the branch and back, meeting a mouse that might be a dragon, having a battle with another snail, and protecting a caterpillar's house. By the time they are finished, the two have become best friends.

The End of the Beginning is a quick little story that is a delight to read. Besides its telling a delightful tale of friendship, there are also very witty moments where Avi uses his skills as a wordsmith to create clever passages, mostly relating to beginnings and ends. The book is illustrated by Tricia Tusa who uses a nostalgic style of drawing that helps The End of the Beginning fit in with older children's classics.

Avi's The End of the Beginning is a definite must for children. With great lessons and a fun tale, this slim volume is a welcome new classic to add to any child's library.
