Emma and Lewis Streat are the perfectly married couple. After more than twenty years of marriage, Emma and Lewis should be enjoying the beginning of the empty-nest phase of their comfortable lives together. But without warning, everything is about to change.

Lewis, a brilliant engineer and the financially secure CEO of Galbraith Technologies, has been recently worried that security problems in his company may have terrible consequences, especially with respect to a new weapon system under development. Then, while walking near his upscale home in Connecticut, Lewis is killed by a hit-and-run driver.

Meanwhile in separate, apparently coincidental incidents, two other people with connections to Lewis's company die under very mysterious circumstances: An engineer from Hong Kong (having recently met with Lewis) is murdered in an apparently random act of violence at JFK Airport; shortly after Lewis's death, a physicist with connections to Galbraith Technologies dies unexpectedly in Cambridge (U.K.) when someone riding a bicycle knocks him down to the pavement.

In the throes of her shock and grief over her husband's death, Emma, however, makes stunning discoveries about the not-so-coincidental deaths in New York and Cambridge. And when she is pushed in front a tour bus in London, when she is seriously ill after an apparent poisoning attempt, and when another Cambridge physicist is killed, Emma begins putting the pieces of the mysterious puzzle together and realizes she is in the center of a murderous storm that involves dark and dangerous problems at Galbraith Technologies.

Bouncing back and forth between Connecticut and England, the strong and appealing protagonist Emma Streat endures every imaginable hazard, and - with a little help from her friends - Emma ultimately discovers and confronts the surprising nemesis responsible for espionage, arson, poisoning, mayhem, and murder. With a plot that has more twists and turns that a country road in rural England, and with enough red herrings to mislead even the most astute mystery reader, the highly recommended Without Warning moves along at a brisk pace to its startling conclusion. Thrilling and intriguing, Eugenia Lovett West's Without Warning is first-class entertainment.
