As the youngest residents of Freedom Village Mobile Home Park, Jimmy and Jen have been friends for most of your lives. The park is populated mostly with retirees although Jimmy and his mother live there because it is affordable. Jen lives with her grandparents.

Their differences become noticeable as they move into adolescence, but they still remain best friends. Jimmy is a late bloomer while Jen begins going out with men she meets on the Internet. She sometimes uses Jimmy as an alibi, which adds to his guilt when she goes missing.

Jimmy is a talented photographer whose snapshots frame Jen's life. The police use one of his photographs on the missing-child photo fliers they use in their search for her.

The story begins after Jen goes missing and Jimmy sets fire to a canyon near Freedom Village. Chapters jump back and forth from the past to the present creating suspense and offering Jimmy's impression of the adults who try to get him to explain, and examine his actions, after Jen disappears. Everyone wants to help, but no one knows how. Help comes from someone whose experiences in live are as frightening as Jimmy's own.
