Stephen Fried's latest book, inside the minds of married men, will leave most wives wondering 'So what's new?' He is so right-on-the-button regarding the uneven distribution of household chores, gift buying, and day-to-day finances such as bill payments, that you begin to question why Fried decided to write this book at all.

Who does he see as his target reader? Is it the married women who have long suffered the idiosyncrasies of their husbands (which, it seems, are pretty universal for the male of the human species), is it the husbands, or is it, heaven forbid, those younger males and females who are debating the pros and cons of getting hitched?

That said, I found the book amusing with a very definite deja vu element! Don't all husbands complain about shopping for presents during the holiday season, when in fact they usually have just the one to tackle the one for their wives; and yes, as a wife, I can understand that this is often a minefield of missed opportunity or inappropriate buying. Also I can totally identify with Fried's observation 'about the complete and utter distractibility of men. We have trouble staying focused on anything for very long ...'

Fried includes several studies on the relationships between married men and their wives, and the numerous difficulties encountered because of the innate gender differences in the way they perceive cleanliness, the use of the bathroom, their friendships, etc.. For an entertaining and quick read, Husbandry is a fund of well known truisms about most husbands and their place in the pecking order of the extended family.
