Every time I think nothing new can be done with alphabet books, someone puts another twist on them, as Steve Martin has done in Alphabet from A to Y With Bonus Letter Z! The fun in his nonsense verses is reinforced by cartoonist Roz Chast's weird, wonderful and wacky pictures.

Inside the covers (my favorite part) are all the grumbling letters that didn't make it into the book itself - the ones with accents, umlauts and so on. In the picture book, each letter is showcased by its own (more or less) rhyme, as in 'Yesterday Yuri the yeti did yoga, / Today he spilled yogurt all over his toga.' Small details in the pictures also elaborate on the letter, as in advertising balloons that say 'Make more money immmmmediiately' or 'Try Mom's meatballs' (for the letter 'M', another of my favorites).

Kids and adults alike will appreciate the goofy humor, and will probably spot hilarious new details every time they open up Alphabet from A to Y With Bonus Letter Z!, and take in its cockamamie recital of the ABCs (including the letter Z).
