It is hot in Lumberville with no relief in sight. 'Sun sizzled. Hair frizzled.' Each day the mercury climbs while the townsfolk try to think of creative ways to cool off.

The whole town is shut down. Even Pastor Denkins shortened his sermon. Some folks have taken to sleeping on their porches, others on fire escapes or along the riverbank. The mayor handed out popsicles. Abigail and Ralphie Blue opened up a lemonade stand, but eventually closed it down and just sold ice.

Like a hot, lazy summer day, nothing really happens in the book - it just takes the reader along for a nostalgic ride through a sweltering summer in the days before air conditioning!

Fans of the Doreen Cronin series of books, Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that Type, will recognize Lewin's whimsical illustrations. The burnt orange and blue colors that dominate the pages will help children understand the feeling of hot or cold weather.
