Kaszuba Locke The brother and sister team of Jennifer & Matthew Holm delight young readers with another episode in the life of the one, the only - Babymouse - this time during two weeks of summer camp. In beguiling black-and-pink graphics, the authors present the saucy heroine (that's how she sees herself and positive attitude counts) beginning with a dream of rescuing a couple lost in the wilderness. Pop! she awakens to find herself on the bus headed for Camp Wild Whiskers. Babymouse has packed a load of equipment including fishing pole and of course cupcakes! She is assigned to an A-frame, announces her arrival to her grouchy cabin mates, and climbs high to reach an available bunk. Babymouse has great ideas, especially about naming their group. Though she suggests Brave Adventure Scouts, the other campers overrule her to choose the same name as the previous year - The Buttercups (wimpy, don't you think?). Camp Counselor Dee-Dee advises the campers of their responsibilities and of competitions, with merits/demerits assigned to each cabin. At the end of the first week of camp, the highest-scoring cabin members will win the Camp Wild Whiskers Cup, plus an ice-cream party. In between imagination and reality, Babymouse wins some and loses some, as she attempts to impress with the craft of making a bracelet (in her excitement she cuffs her wrist to another camper), her skills at archery (the arrow goes astray), and sitting around the campfire toasting marshmallows (uh, oh, an accident with a hot marshmallow). Camp Babymouse is an enchanting, enticing read of the continuing adventures of the Holms' hardy character. Enjoy Babymouse as she romps through the woods (determined she knows the right trail), observes nature (conspicuously), competes in a swimming match (though reluctant to enter cold water), and forges ahead in a canoe race (in her imagination she is Captain Babymouse, 'Scourge of the Seven Seas').
