Desiree Shapiro is back on the streets of Manhattan, solving crime. Or rather, in the case of Murder Can Depress Your Dauchshund, she's on the streets of a small town in New York state.

A well-known and well-loved man is gunned down and stuffed into the trunk of his car on the eve of donating a kidney to a dying brother. The brother is so devastated at the thought of losing the kidney – his key to life – that he overdoses.

Enter Desiree with her penchant for asking all the right questions and taking voluminous notes. After transcribing these notes, she makes it a habit to peruse them until something catches her attention and she is able to name a killer. The title of the mystery refers to the murdered man's pet dog, who stops eating and wails over its master's loss.

Murder Can Depress Your Dachshund is the fourteenth episode in an enchanting series that will keep you entertained. Eichler has a keen sense of humor that is abundantly displayed. Her characters have the flaws we all have - except, of course, for a murderous streak. This is a great read for that lazy day on the beach.
