When Jinx Kingsley is found unconscious in a car wreck on a abandoned air field, the police suspect it was a suicide attempt. She is a well known fashion photographer, and the only daughter of millionaire Adam Kingsley. A blood test reveals high levels of blood alcohol. After interviewing neighbours the police find out she was found inside her car with the engine running in her garage a few days previously.

Things go from bad to worse for Jinx when the police discover that her fiancé Leo has left her for her best friend Meg, and now they cannot be found for questioning. Suffering from the trauma of the accident Jinx is admitted by her father to a private clinic, where she struggles to regain her memory with the help of Dr. Alan Protheroe. As he works with Jinx through her nightmares and flashbacks we learn of the dysfunctional family life Jinx had with her father, her stepmother Betty, and half brothers Miles and Fergus. Her father is emotionally absent from the family, her stepmother is a drunk, and her brothers gamble, party and break all the rules.

Soon the bodies of Jinx's ex-fiancé and best friend are found, and it's discovered that they died in the same tragic way as her first husband ten years earlier. Someone is also brutally attacking prostitutes in the area and the evidence points to the Kingsley family. Is Adam Kingsley involved in these savage killings? Is he trying to protect his daughter or is he controlling her? The Dark Room is a very complex interesting read full of twists, turns, and surprises. I will definitely read more of Minette Walters' work.
