The painting of a lush campsite scene on the front cover entices the reader into this gorgeously illustrated picture book on the camping experience. The author's introduction encourages us to locate animals on each colorful page - some of them camouflaged and as hard to spot as they can be in real life (the legend in the back gives tidbits of interesting information on each one).

Start by peeking out of your sleeping bags with the two children in the book. The moose is easy to spot, but what about the chickadee and chipmunk? Follow the moose tracks to the next scene as the children take out their canoe and begin exploring. There are loons and raccoons, beavers and bear, otters and owls, and many more animals to track through the pages.

When We Go Camping ends with campfire time as 'orange flames dance away the darkness' and the children tell 'wonderful, scary tales' and dream of camping. This is the perfect picture book to read to kids in anticipation of a camping trip, or to bring back wonderful memories of a past vacation.
