In Dear John, Nicholas Sparks recounts the reaction of a soldier who did indeed receive a Dear John letter. Then the story takes an unusual turn. John Tyree joined the army after high school for something to do, as he felt his life was going nowhere. The service gave him structure and purpose. Then he met Savannah who quickly became his reason for living.

Promising to wait for him, Savannah watched him leave on a tour of duty. The unimaginable happened – 9/11. John committed to serve his country in its time of need. He eventually received Savannah's painful letter and life as he knew it was no more. But John's tale doesn't end there. What happens after that is the crux of the plot, and speaks of a man who has a great love that doesn't fade with absence.

John, a quiet, introspective man, grows up on the pages of his story. Savannah, a college student, is level-headed and sure of her goals. John's father, an interesting character, suffers from a little understood and often unrecognized condition. Readers know that a Nicholas Sparks book means a good, touching, and satisfying read. Dear John is no exception.
