This short (at 160 pages) mystery is the third in the Dassas Cormier series, set in 1920s Louisiana. Cormier has returned to Marshall's Bayou to what remains of his family.

Hired as Police Chief, he is suspicious of a stranger who arrives in the tiny town claiming to be on a horse buying mission. The man knows nothing about horses and Cormier wonders about him, especially after he realizes that someone is sneaking around his and his brother's homes in the dark of night.

The Colonel's Tale is a delightful book that encompasses enough action to satisfy any mayhem maven. The pace never falters but moves forward at a goodly speed. I would like to know the characters a little better, but assume further episodes will afford me that chance. I like Dassas - he remembers what it is to be a child.
