Boo and Baa Have Company    by Lena Landström & Olof Landström Order:  USA  Can Farrar Straus & Giroux, 2006 (2006) Hardcover     Reviewed by Hilary Daninhirsch The Landströms are a Swedish husband and wife author/illustrator team who have written other books starring Boo and Baa, a pair of lovable, bumbling sheep who often find themselves in no-win situations. (This picture book is translated by Joan Sandin.) The premise is simple: a cat is stuck up in a tree, so the pair tries to lure him down in a variety of ways. The cat finally comes down but Boo, who has climbed up after the cat, becomes stuck in the tree himself. Baa makes him a bunch of sandwiches and puts them in a basket, which she sends up to him via a rope, and then later uses the rope to bring Boo back down to the ground. When Boo is rescued, the cat leaps back up in the tree, and later that night, is found sleeping on Boo and Baa's floor, curled up in a rug. The dialogue is somewhat flat and short on plot, but perhaps something was lost in the translation from the original Swedish. Nonetheless, the book will still appeal to the youngest of children for its simplicity and subtle humor. The illustrations, however, are the book's saving grace: Boo and Baa are depicted as expressive and adorable. Though this isn't a series of books I'd necessarily want to collect, Boo and Baa Have Company is worth a peek.
